Spring Into Success at NACP

Spring is in the air and as the first quarter of 2012 year ends we wanted to share the exciting events that have been happening on and off our NEW Academy Canoga Park campus.

NACP Students Steal the Show!

Does NACP have talent? We sure do and the community of Canoga Park discovered this fact on March 16th at our 7th annual Talent Show. This event handed over creative control to students who developed their own performance acts, which included card tricks, Do Wop Dance routines, piano ballads and more! Our artistic students never failed to wow the audience of parents, education supporters and community members with their creative ability. Great job!

Dr. Suess' Reading Night

Oh the places you will go! And on February 28, many students and families went to NEW Academy's Reading Night in the gymnasium. This event featured various exciting events, such as Danielle Soibelman from the hit Broadway production 'Shrek the Musical' as our guest reader, 'Act Out a Scene' station, 'Bookmark Creations' station, and 'Capturing Literacy' Photo station. Over one hundred pajama clad students, parents and family members brought their blankets, pillows, favorite books and smiles to our annual Dr. Suess Reading night. They ended the night by taking a photo memoir to forever remember the importance of reading with their family.

A Warm Thank You to Our Community Sponsors; Metro Transportation and Gaspar Insurances!

It takes a whole village to raise a child and we truly appreciate when community members offer their time, material donations, and financial assistance to our wonderful students. Thank you METRO for being our High Honors Sponsor for our arts program and thank you GASPAR Insurances for being our Honor Roll Sponsor for our general school programs.

We would also like to thank Nancy Bergquist of Green Thumb Nursery for donating potting soil, fruit plants and other supplies to our school garden and the National Council Jewish Women for donating 150 books and homemade book marks to our classrooms. NACP Music Program wins the Bravo Award

On March 1st , 2012, Los Angeles Music Center awarded the music program at NEW Academy Canoga Park the prestigious Bravo Award during its 30th Annual Bravo Awards Celebration at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Upon receiving the award, the music teacher Genein Letford commented, "With the threat of elementary arts being cut all throughout LAUSD, it is inspiring to have people on your team who still believe the arts are an essential part of our students' education."

She went on to say, "To see these students come in as kindergarteners, clapping and singing, and then leave as 5th graders playing Sousa's marches, is an indescribable feeling. As a teacher, you never know where your impact ends. NEW Academy continues to be a place of possibility!" Congratulations to all the students, teachers and community members who help students have a complete arts-filled learning experience.

NACP Kids Run Their First Marathon!

On Saturday, October 22nd, thousands of Los Angeles area K-5th grade school children and parents ceremonially began running/walking 26.2 miles at UCLA and went home to finish their marathon in increments of ¼ to ½ mile at a time over six months. Fourth and fifth grade NEW Academy students, under the direction of Ms. Olson and Ms. Greenen, ran their marathon segments during their PE time and kept track of their progress over time. Finally, on March 10, many of those students completed their ceremonial last lap at UCLA and earned their official Finisher Medal and a Marathon T-Shirt to mark their amazing accomplishment!

NACP Honor Band Performs at our Sister School, NEW Academy Science and Art (NASA)

After watching the amazing performance 'BLAST' at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Honor Band students had the opportunity to perform for the students at NEW Academy Science and Arts in downtown Los Angeles. The NASA students were one of the best audiences the Honor Band has entertained and they enjoyed the three musical selections, 'Mary Ann', 'Skip To My Lou', and 'Eagle Summit March' that the Honor Band performed. Since most of the students from both schools were unaware that they had a sister school, this was a great opportunity to be introduced to each other by using the arts.

Learning Beyond Classroom Walls

At NEW Academy, we know education can happen anywhere, not just within the four walls of our classrooms. We look for many opportunities within and around the Los Angeles area to help expand our students' horizons. Check out a few places we've been!
